What Is An LPVO
LPVO stands for Low Power Variable Optic and can be identified by appearance. They stand out with a larger rear objective lens and a narrow front tube.
These have become one of if not the most popular rifle optics for the past few years, and a good reason. They work great and are very versatile.
An LPVO is a scope that can be dialed back to 1x magnification and covers engagements at close to medium range.
Magnification
Magnification on LPVOs starts at 1x and can go back to 10x. The most common magnification ranges are 1-6x and 1-8x.
You might think the more magnification, the better, but in the case of LPVOs, you want a really clear and “true” 1x. Again these are not designed for precision rifles past 500 yards.
A true 1x means no magnification at all, so you can shoot quickly with no distortion when looking through the optic.
Eye Relief
Long eye relief is another area where an LPVO excels. Some combat optics with fixed magnification, like the Trijicon ACOG, are known for having limited and short eye relief.
LPVOs have longer and more forgiving eye relief, meaning you do not have to have the perfect cheek weld to get a good sight picture.
Being able to pick up your sight picture with the reticle in focus from awkward positions is a nice feature of LPVOs, especially if you run and gun.
Most long-range and traditional scopes have a minimal window of eye relief. Your eye must always be far from the scope to get a clear image.
LPVOs are way more forgiving, and you can still get a clean sight picture even if your eye is closer or farther away from the glass.
With a larger window of eye relief, you can engage quicker and have a faster target acquisition time.
Reticle
There are two styles of reticles when it comes to LPVOs. FFP (first focal plane) and SFP (second focal plane).
FFP means the crosshairs or reticle will also zoom in when you increase the scope’s magnification. These are better for knowing your holdovers and are easier to use. Less thinking.
SFP means the crosshairs and reticle is always fixed and does not zoom in when you increase the magnification. These can be slightly more complicated because you will have to know your holds change depending on what magnification you are set to.
At closer ranges, this isn’t a huge deal to still be accurate and hit targets, but it becomes more of an issue at a distance.
Increased Durability
Another reason to use an LPVO compared to a traditional scope is the amount of abuse they can take.
This is a significant factor when companies design and build these. They understand that they will require additional strength because of the situations and environments they will be used in.
Long-range scopes are usually treated better on long-range precision rifles than a primary battle optic.
LPVOs can take a beating and still stay in the fight.
Mounts
You must purchase a mount for LPVOs, as they do not come with them. Many good options are available, but remember that an LPVO with a mount will add some weight to your rifle.
They also make mounts with plates integrated if you want to run your LPVO in conjunction with a micro red dot for an even faster 1x or if you run night vision.
Why LPVO?
The best answer to switching over to an LPVO from a red dot is that you still get all of the abilities of a red dot (fast target acquisition) and the magnification of a scope.
An LPVO is the best of both worlds. Close quarters and at range. These scopes unlock the full potential of your rifle.
Magnification is king when it comes to shooting past 100 yards, and having every advantage possible is key. Many people want the ability to see further to make accurate shots at a distance and to be able to identify targets properly.
The downside with a traditional scope is you give up your close-range capabilities. That is where the LPVO shines. It does close-range and long-range pretty well and makes your rifle more versatile.
I have often asked many people which optic is their “go-to” setup, and if they can only have one optic, which would it be? LPVO is almost always the answer because it does everything well and is perfect for a general-purpose rifle setup.
Best LPVO For The Money
The best all-around LPVO for the money is the Vortex Razor Gen II-E 1-6x. It perfectly balances magnification, eye relief, reliability, and performance.
It is priced reasonably and is my number one pick for anyone unsure which one to get. It is a mid-tier low-power variable optic and one of the most popular.
Vortex Razor Gen II-E 1-6x
One of the best all-around low-power variable optics is the Vortex Razor Gen II-E 1-6x. It is the perfect rifle scope for close to mid-range engagements and is like having a red dot and rifle scope combined in one. This is the best of both worlds.
Optically, it delivers razor-sharp image clarity, resolution, color accuracy, light transmission, and edge-to-edge sharpness.
The glass quality is superb, and the glass clarity is top-notch. This is one of the main reasons to purchase one of these.
This rifle scope is a true 1x on the low end and is the best one I have seen. It is very impressive.
I enjoy my Razor Gen II-E. The glass is superb, has outstanding clarity, is fast up close, and is still very accurate at long distances.
I didn’t find it too heavy and could transition from near to distant targets without any problems.
Vortex offers this rifle scope in 3 different reticle options—BDC, MOA, and MRAD style of reticles. The BDC is the most popular and common selection people go with.
This is a second focal plane reticle optic, meaning the reticle will always maintain the same size no matter what magnification it is set on.

Best Budget LPVO
I recommend getting a good budget LPVO scope for someone new or just starting with adding a scope to their AR.
You don’t want to get something cheap that won’t work well or not hold zero, but you shouldn’t spend a fortune when you’re just starting out.
The Vortex Strike Eagle 1-8x is perfect if you are on a budget and want a good entry-level, low variable power optic.
Primary Arms 1-6x

Tough and bright, the Vortex Crossfire II 1-4x24mm Rifle Scope does not compromise its performance.
It has a long eye relief, a fast-focus eyepiece, fully multi-coated lenses, and resettable MOA turrets.
The Vortex Crossfire II 1-4x has a hard anodized single-piece aircraft-grade aluminum tube that is nitrogen purged and O-ring sealed for waterproof/fog-proof performance.
The V-Plex reticle works well, and I like it because it isn’t too busy when looking through it and is not distracting.
The fit and finish are just as good as some of Vortex’s more expensive scopes.

Vortex Strike Eagle 1-8x
The Vortex Strike Eagle 1-8×24 gives accurate holdovers at any magnification you’ve been looking for in an LPVO scope, allowing you to dominate close quarters and stretch your effective range.
The EBR-8 reticle provides true red dot-like performance at 1x and holdovers out to 600 yards, and an included ranging feature lets you make quick decisions in the reticle.
This specific model is the first focal plane scope version. This will come down to personal preference, but I believe the FFP will give you an advantage, especially in a low power variable optic.
The reticle will also zoom in when you adjust the magnification ring and zoom in to match. This allows you to range targets quickly.
You can dial up illumination with nine daylight and two night-vision settings to perfectly match your shooting scenario.
It is built on a 30mm tube which is now pretty standard for LPVO scopes and familiar, so choosing a mount will not be an issue.
A first focal plane scope for this price point is something you can’t beat. The more oversized capped turrets give a very tactile feel and allow you to adjust on the fly. The included throw lever and sunshade out-of-the-box work great, and most scopes will make you purchase these separately.
Very smooth transition for magnification. The magnification ring feels like butter but is stiff enough not to move under recoil.
With 3.9 inches of eye relief, it feels like a red dot on 1x. Reticle Illumination is bright enough for daytime use. The etched reticle is crisp and has impressive clarity. It is built well and feels like it could take a few hard hits.
One of the best LPVO scopes for the money is what I recommend if you are on a budget.

Best Mid-Tier LPVO
If you want something a little better and have a bigger budget, you can move into a mid-tier LPVO.
This will have more features and better quality, the build will be more precise, and the optic will perform better.
Most people go with mid-tier low-power variable optics eventually and usually tend to have all the features you want for a reasonable price.
EOTech Vudu 1-6x
Considering its size, the EOTech Vudu 1-6x FFP Precision Rifle Scope is a compact optic with seemingly impossible features.
These have an EOTech Speed Ring reticle that allows quick target acquisition while at lower power. Still, you get great accuracy and image resolution at higher power to master longer shots.
They took their circle dot reticle from the Holosight and put it into an FFP riflescope.
On 1x, you get the 65MOA circle with a “dot” center, and when cranked up to 6x, that “dot” becomes a ranging reticle.
Simple push-button controls on the scope activate the illuminated reticle to get a clear shot in low light conditions.
The reticle is crisp and does not wash out in bright lighting conditions as some other optic optics do in the same price range. The 1X is as close to a true 1X as I have seen, and the Eotech “Donut of Death” is easy to pick up for fast target acquisition.
If you are familiar with and a fan of their Holosights, you can comfortably transition to this LPVO without any issues and with no learning curve.
All adjustments are positive and tactile. Daytime bright illumination. I love that it’s an etched reticle that can be run without batteries.
Overall a very impressive low power variable optic.

This Sig Sauer Tango6T features night vision illuminated reticle settings to be used alongside night vision optics.
There are a few different reticle options, but I recommend the DWLR6 illuminated reticle.
You’ll acquire targets quicker thanks to the illuminated reticle and fast-focus eyepiece, and the reticles are also glass-etched in case you run out of power.
The Sig Tango6T has crystal clear glass and numerous brightness settings for the reticle. It was easy to set up with its leveling line indicator and performed flawlessly. The eye relief is user-friendly, and the field of view is excellent for finding the target at distances.
I like the MOTAC (auto on/off function). It comes with a well-built throw lever, and the dial has fiber optics to see them easily.
