Best Gun Room Vault Doors
The best and most ideal setup for any serious firearm collection has a walk-in gun safe room. Some people refer to these as panic rooms or strong rooms.
Rooms like these can double as storm shelters and bomb shelters. Also, be in a safe space in case of a home invasion.
These are amazing, but I know not everyone will have the space or money for this setup.
There are many options for securing a walk-in gun safe room. In a future post, I will explain how to build one of them and what you need to consider while planning the build.

The minimum rough door opening for Clamshell Vault Door is 82 x 40.

Ironworks Vault Door
The Ironworks Vault Door is an excellent vault door for your gun room.
It has a 120 Minute Fire Ratings at 1400 Degrees°F (fire ratings can vary based on installation & room construction) and uses dual intumescent expanding fire seals.
The door is 5.39″ thick with full coverage 1/4″ steel face.
A ball-bearing drill plate and a spring-loaded relocker protect the lock.
A tempered glass relocker with a remote spring-loaded relocker that deadbolts the system. This vault door also uses an anti-tamper clutch handle.

Browning Safes LED Safe Lighting Kit
Seeing your guns and valuables is essential, especially in an emergency. The Browning LED Safe Light Kit is an easy-to-install light kit that provides long-lasting LEDs.
It will illuminate your gun safe to locate your weapons and valuables quickly.

What Size Gun Safe Should You Get?
The bigger, the better. Like most people, your safe will fill up quicker than you think. Also, they store more than just firearms. You will put important documents, jewelry, coins, or other valuable items you might want to protect.
I suggest getting an enormous safe you can fit in the ideal location of your home. Space may be the limiting factor. You do not want to run into the issue of getting a safe that is too small only to have to upgrade later down the road. It’s easier to buy a sizeable safe up front.
Should I build a Gun Vault?
In an ideal world, yes, you should. However, this won’t be an option for most people if you own your home and have a basement. The best option will be to build a hardened safe room with a vault door and reinforced walls.
Building a vault is the best option if you have the space and money. However, buying a large gun safe will be what most people can afford and accommodate.
Getting a large safe first, then later down the road when you can build a gun room, is also a good idea.
Should I get a hidden safe?
I like the option of having a firearm hidden in plain sight so that I can access it quickly in case of an emergency. These are nice because you will be the only person who knows the hidden location. In an emergency, time is essential.
You may not have time to go to your large safe to arm yourself. If you have a hidden safe, I recommend keeping one or two firearms at the ready but do not replace your large gun safe completely. Hidden safes are great to supplement your main gun safe.

What are the most reliable gun safes?
Mechanical locks are going to be the most reliable type of gun safe. Then will be a digital keypad and, finally, biometric locks.
In my experience, I have seen the biometric scanners fail and would not rely on them during an emergency if I needed to get to my firearm quickly. Seconds matter in life-or-death situations, and I prefer a mechanical or keypad lock in these scenarios.
Biometrics are excellent for large storage safes I do not need access to quickly.
Which gun safe lock is better, mechanical or digital?
Nothing is more reliable than a mechanical lock. Still, it is not quick, and a digital lock can be faster but also risk failing.
Although digital locks are becoming more and more reliable, some people prefer a good old mechanical lock.
They both have pros and cons, which come down to personal preference. What is more important to you? Reliability or speed.
Should I keep my guns in a safe?
Yes absolutely. Being a gun owner is a huge responsibility, and you must be smart. Keeping your firearms lockup up and secure away from people and kids who should not have access is very important.
Please be responsible and keep your guns in a safe. By keeping your firearms in a gun safe, you will also help protect them from theft. Your weapons are supposed to be used to protect you, and no one wants their weapon used against them or the people they care about.
Secure storage of your gun collection is very important to prevent them from becoming stolen guns.
How many gun safes do I need?
Enough to secure all of the firearms you own. One is what most people will get, but I recommend that everyone should have at least two for their home.
One small gun is safe for quick access to a firearm that is staged in an emergency. Then one large gun safe with added security to store multiple guns, ammo, and other valuables.
