What Is A Mosin Nagant?
Developed from 1882 to 1891, it was used by the armed forces of the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union, and various other nations.
It is one of the most mass-produced military bolt-action rifles in history with over 37 million units having been made since 1891. In spite of its age, it has been used in various conflicts around the world up to the present day.
The Mosin-Nagant is a Russian bolt-action, internal magazine-fed rifle. It is most commonly chambered in the 7.62×54R cartridge, which was designed alongside the rifle.
There are many different versions of this rifle, the most famous being the M91/30.
It is a rugged rifle that was famously used by the Russians during the second world war.
Now they have become one of the most popular military surplus rifles that are very collectible. They can usually be purchased for just a few hundred dollars because of the amount of them that were produced.
They are slowly becoming harder to find at a decent price.
Where To Purchase A Mosin Nagant?
These rifles are great for first-time gun owners because of how inexpensive they are to purchase. Also, they are a good piece to add to any firearms collection and are a part of history.
They are also fun guns to shoot, ammo is relatively cheap and makes for a fun day at the gun range. Many collectors and traditionalists would not like the idea of modifying the original design, but with so many on the market, you can own two.
One to keep stock and traditional, and another one to modernize.
With the supply slowly drying up, they are rising in price. You can still pick them up for a good price though.
When looking for a good one to buy, the hex receivers are more sort after and will be more expensive.

Mosin Nagant Stock Upgrade
The first place to start when upgrading a Mosin Nagant is by adding a modern stock that is adjustable.
There are a few manufacturers that make aftermarket stocks for these rifles and they all work great.
ProMag Archangel Tactical Stock
The best stock to add to the Mosin Nagant is the ProMag Archangel Tactical Stock. It will give the rifle a modern feel.
This is a drop in tactical stock to outfit your classic Mosin-Nagant M1891 with a sturdy and reliable shooting platform that will greatly enhance your experience at the range.
These stocks have tons of customizable features to suit your style including a click-adjustable length-of-pull with a rubber butt-pad and a click-adjustable cheek riser.
Another reason this is the best stock is that it will also accept the detachable magazines and the Timney Trigger without any modification.
This stock is outfitted with 3 steel inserts for QD swing swivel attachment, and there’s a grip storage compartment within.
The ProMag Archangel stock is comfortable and looks great. This is the best stock for your money.

Mosin Nagant Detachable Magazine
Now that you have an upgraded tactical stock that accepts the detachable box magazines you will need some extra of these mags.
They work great and are not that expensive.
ProMag Archangel Rifle Magazine
Having a lot of spare mags is highly recommended. The ProMag Archangel Rifle Magazine comes in 5 rounds and also in 10 rounds.
I like having about six of these in my inventory. They are reliable and have no feeding or jamming issues.
These are great for quick reloads and allow the rifle to be more modern and effective.

Mosin Nagant Trigger Upgrade
One of the best upgrades you can do to your Mosin Nagant is to add a better trigger. The old-style surplus military trigger leaves a lot of room for improvement.
Many people think of these rifles as not being accurate. This is simply not true and with a good aftermarket trigger, you can greatly increase the accuracy of Mosin Nagant.
Mosin Nagant Timney Trigger
The best trigger you can go with is the Mosin Nagant Timney Trigger. This is a match-grade quality for a budget shooter.
The Timney Trigger is the best value upgrade you could possibly make on your Mosin Nagant. This trigger is already compatible with the ProMag Archangel stock so installation is very easy.
It is fully adjustable and you can fine-tune this trigger to your own personal preference.
All of the components are heat-treated and assembled into a lightweight alloy housing for smooth crisp pull.
If you only plan on doing one upgrade to your Mosin Nagant rifle then this should be it.

Mosin Nagant Optic Upgrade
The Mosin Nagant is a long-range rifle with a big caliber. It can be very effective out to range but the standard iron sights just won’t cut it.
To get the most out of this rifle you need a good quality scope.
Many people hesitate to put an optic that costs more than the rifle itself. The good thing is nowadays there are plenty of good quality optics that are affordable.
Primary Arms 4-14x Rifle Scope
The perfect scope for the Mosin Nagant is the Primary Arms 4-14x Rifle Scope.
The Primary Arms ACSS 4-14x44mm FFP Rifle Scope is uniquely designed to boost your accuracy while shooting and the reticle is amazing.
It comes with a front focal plane ACSS HUD/DMR reticle that will stay true on close-range targets at 4x up to long-distance targets at 14x.
This scope provides quick-ranging, wind holds, and can be precisely tuned with a side-mounted parallax adjustment knob.
The Primary Arms scope is tough, with a shockproof, waterproof, and fog-resistant construction.
The combination of the great reticle, magnification, and durability make this the best scope for the Mosin Nagant, and it is affordable.

Vortex Cantilever 30mm Rifle Scope Ring Mount
To attach the scope to the rifle you will need a good set of scope rings. I recommend the Vortex Cantilever Scope Ring Mount.
This is one of my favorite sets of rings to mount a scope. It is a solid one-piece design and will work for any 30mm tube scope.
There is no quick detach lever so once you mount it you cannot remove it without re-zeroing the optic.
It works great and is a solid setup.

Mosin Nagant Rail Upgrade
The next thing you need in order to mount the scope on this rifle is a good quality rail. There are a few different options but some have fitment issues.
I recommend a one-piece rail system, this will ensure your optic holds zero and maintains accuracy while shooting.
Leapers UTG Tactical Tri-Rail Mount
The best rail mount for the Mosin Nagant is the Leapers UTG Tactical Tri-Rail Mount. The machined mount plate allows for a solid fit.
The two side rails are removable and optional. The top rail allows for mounting a scope that is secured to the receiver.
It comes with extra mounting bolts and screws and the lock-up is very tight. This is a simple and good solution for adding an optic to the Mosin Nagant.

Mosin Nagant Muzzle Brake Upgrade
The 7.62x54r round does pack some punch and the Mosin Nagant does have a good amount to recoil.
A good way to mitigate this is by adding a muzzle brake. If your rifle does not already have a threaded barrel then you will need to get a muzzle brake that has a thread kit included.
DELTAC Slingshot Muzzle Brake
The DELTAC Slingshot Muzzle Brake is the best brake for the Mosin Nagant. It comes with a threading kit that will allow you to add this to the end of your muzzle.
Designed for the avid do-it-yourselfer, this kit has everything needed to thread the barrel of your Mosin Nagant to an M15X1RH thread.
The high-quality tools included in this kit will ensure that your threads are true and permanent.
This muzzle brake will reduce the felt recoil and make shooting your Mosin Nagant more enjoyable.

Mosin Nagant Bi-pod
A really good accessory to add to this rifle is a bi-pod. Especially with the long-range capabilities and the Archangel stock you can shoot this from the prone position with more comfortability and stability.
The ProMag Archangel stock has a rail section under the barrel that makes attaching a bipod easy.
Leapers UTG Tactical OP Bipod
The best bipod to keep your Mosin Nagant stable is the Leapers UTG Tactical OP Bipod that comes with a Picatinny swivel mount.
It is fully adjustable to achieve your ideal height off the ground and angle, this Bipod offers foldable arms and extendable legs for the most precise placement.
With dual mounting to appeal to various rails, the Leapers UTG Tactical OP Bipod features Picatinny and Swivel Stud mounts to attach easily to your rifle’s bottom rail.
It is made of high-tech durable construction with a steel top platform, the fully panning Leapers UTG Tactical Picatinny and Swivel Stud Bipod will stand strong for years to come.
I like that this bipod comes with everything you need to attach it to an under-barrel Picatinny rail.

Mosin Nagant Sling Upgrade
No rifle setup would be complete without a sling. Even with a long-range, or bench rest style gun, I still recommend having a good sling setup.
The ProMag Archangel stock comes with multiple sling mounting options. There are QD mounts or standard sling mounts.
Blue Force Gear Vickers Padded Sling
One of the best slings on the market for any rifle is the Blue Force Gear Vickers Padded Sling.
I own several of these slings and they are by far the best slings on the market, especially for a full-size rifle.
These are fully adjustable and have a pull tab for quick adjustments. It comes with QD sling swivels for easy mounting.

Mosin Nagant 7.62x54R Ammo
Finally, your gonna need a decent stockpile of 7.62x54R ammunition. This is considered a necessity.
Ammo is increasingly becoming harder to find and the price keeps going up, so it is best practice to purchase as much ammo as you can when you find it in stock.

What is the maximum effective range of a Mosin-Nagant??
500 meters (550 yds), 800+ m (875+ yards with optics)
How accurate is a Mosin-Nagant??
Despite its shortcomings, the Model 1891/30 was rugged, reliable, and accurate, its average minute of arc ranging from 1.5 to below 1 (less than an inch over 100 meters). It proved murderously successful.
Are Mosin-Nagants worth anything?
The vast majority of Mosin Nagant rifles are not worth more than the few hundred dollars they tend to sell for at gun shows, gun shops, and pawnbrokers.
Why are Mosin Nagants so cheap?
Supply and demand. The price was so low several years ago because warehouses full of them were being emptied so they could be sold on the civilian market.

I bought my 91/30 – man. Year 1930 about 5 years ago. Along with 2- 300 round tins of ammo. Just to have one in my collection. Now I am ready to play and do a conversion on it. I am currently waiting on my promag stock (due on 10/22) and a scope and rail mount from a friend that swears by it on his 91/30. We’ll see! I do not intend to cut and change the bolt so I can return to stock configuration if I choose to later. Will be doing several upgrades in the months to come. I’ll keep you posted.
