Best Scar 17 Upgrades & Accessories
The FN Scar 17 has been around for a while now and is still one of my favorite rifles.
If you are lucky enough to own one of these rifles, you may want to change some things. Adding some stuff in this article will unlock the Scar 17’s full potential.
This post will go over the best Scar 17 upgrades and accessories that are available on the market today.
What is a Scar 17?
The Scar 17 is a battle rifle chambered in 7.62 x 51 Nato (308 Win) that is lightweight and durable. U.S. Special Operations uses this rifle because of its reliability.
It has a free-float barrel and is completely ambidextrous.
This is one of the most sexiest-looking rifles I have ever seen (especially in Flat Dark Earth).
FN Herstal did a lot of R&D on the Scar platform and this is also why they are so expensive.
There are a few different versions of this rifle, the Scar 17H (heavy), the Scar 17L (lightweight), and the Scar 17S (semi-auto).
In this article, I will be focusing on the Scar 17S because it is the variant that is more owned by civilians.
FN also recently released a DMR (designated marksman rifle) version of the Scar 17, I will focus on the battle rifle version of this rifle.
Yet, all the upgrades and accessories mentioned below will work on all versions.

SCAR 17 STOCK
The stock that comes standard on the Scar 17 is commonly referred to as the “UGG Boot” because that is exactly what it looks like. Most people don’t like how bulky it is even though it functions great.
The stock is folding and telescoping but is know to break sometimes when constantly folding the stock aggressively. Some people also think it just looks plain stupid and I agree.
For this reason, one of the first upgrades I did to my Scar 17 is to replace the stock.
Kinetic Development Group Scar Stock
I decided to go with the Kinetic Development Group Scar Stock. This stock is a vast improvement over the standard stock. It comes with QD attachment points and is a very durable and sturdy setup.
It also has a hidden battery storage compartment and is a lower profile. This is beneficial if your train with body armor while going to the range.
All of the adjustments are smooth and feel solid and lock uptight. It is slightly lighter and doesn’t make any clunky noises when adjusting
This stock is very aesthetically pleasing and looks much better than the “UGG Boot” one that originally comes with the Scar 17. I highly recommend adding this to your rifle and should be one of the first Scar 17 upgrades you do.

Best Scar 17 Trigger
The absolute Scar 17 upgrade you can do is change out the trigger assembly. The Geissele Super Scar Trigger.
I love Geissele triggers and use them on all of my rifles. I was excited to find out that they make one for the Scar 17 and it is probably the best trigger on the market.
The Geissele Super Scar Trigger is a huge improvement over the stock mil-spec one. It is a two-stage trigger with a very crisp pull and has a clean break.
If you only choose to do one upgrade on this list, this is the one you should do!
This upgrade will greatly increase your accuracy with the rifle and I cannot recommend it enough.

Best Scar 17 Optics
So there are three optic setups that I recommend for the Scar 17. An EOTech with the magnifier, the Elcan Spectre, and the Vortex LPVO.
It comes down to personal preference on which setup to go with and also the purpose you plan on using this rifle for (philosophy of use)
EOTech EXPS-3 & Magnifier
One of the best optics you can add to your Scar 17 is the EOTech EXPS3 & Magnifier Combo. It is great for close to midrange and with the magnifier combo, it will extend your range even further.
I personally like the version with the single dot inside the ring and the OPMOD version that comes in tan.
The outer ring is a 65 MOA circle and the center red dot is .5 MOA giving you the ability to make accurate and precise shots.
The G33 magnifier is 3.25 times magnification and is mounted securely behind the optic with a quick throw mount. This makes transitioning very quick and smooth.
This optic has an integrated mount so you will not have to purchase one separately.

Elcan Specter
Another one of the best optics for the Scar 17 is the Elcan Specter. This is a prism-style optic that has a 1 – 4x magnification and the reticle is calibrated for the 7.62.
The Elcan Specter is a proven weapon sight that has been used by many Special Operations units worldwide.
It is extremely robust and reliable and is a top-tier optic.
One downside is that it is on the heavier side but I find it works great on the Scar 17 because of how light the rifle is, to begin with.
It comes in two different colors and I personally like the Flat Dark Earth color and it looks great on the Scar 17.
This optic also comes with the mount integrated.

Vortex Razor HD Gen II
The best LPVO for the Scar 17 is the Vortex Razor HD Gen II. LPVO has become very popular recently in the firearms community and I have noticed a lot of people are switching over to them.
The Vortex is the most bang for your buck in my opinion. The glass is very clear and crisp and works great in low-light environments.
This optic is a 1 – 6x magnification and is great for close to long-range engagements.
Vortex offers this scope in three different reticles so you have options when choosing one. Vortex also has the best warranty out of any company I have dealt with.
I recommend mounting this optic on a Geissele Super Precision Mount.

Geissele Super Precision Mount
If you decide on using the Vortex LPVO, the best mount you can get for it is the Geissele Super Precision Mount.
This mount is rock solid and your scope will never shift and always hold zero. The level of detail and precision Geissele uses when manufacturing these is insane.
I have a few of these mounts and it is my go-to for any scope. I absolutely love this mount!
I hate when I see people buy a very nice and expensive optic then throw it on their rifle with a cheap mount.

Offset Trijicon RMR
Having an LPVO scope mounted as your primary optic could leave you to desire an offset red dot for quick transitions to close-range engagements.
The Trijicon RMR is the best optic for this setup.
Having a setup up like this is very expensive so most people won’t do it, but it the ultimate setup for your Scar 17.
Trijicon also makes a 45 Degree Offset Mount that is low profile and works great for the RMR.

Kinetic Development Group Mrex MK II Handguard
The best M-Lok Handguard for the Scar 17 is the KDG Mrex MK II. It is a low-profile handguard that is fully M-Lok compatible.
It is lightweight and very durable. The installation is slightly difficult though.
Still definitely worth it. It will make your rifle feel different and more pointable compared to the stock handguard.
They are offered in two different lengths and two different colors.

Kinetic Development Group Scar 17 Charging Handle
The standard charging handle that comes with the Scar 17 kinda sucks. My hand easily slips off when using it and it is very frustrating.
The KDG Charging Handle is a huge improvement over the original and is the best one available for the Scar 17.
It is easy to wrap your hand around and allows you to get good leverage when charging the rifle.
They offer this in two different colors and it is also ambidextrous and can be changed to the other side for left-handed shooters.

BESt Scar 17 Pistol Grip
If you have been reading here for a while you will know that I am a huge fan of the Magpul MOE K2+ pistol grip. I put this grip on almost every firearm I can.
Unfortunately, this grip will not work with the Scar 17 unless you do some Dremel work to remove some material to make it fit. You also need to shorten the screw so it doesn’t interfere with the trigger group.
Or you can save yourself the time and headache and just purchase one from Parker Mountain Machine that is the same grip just already modified to fit on the Scar 17 and only cost a little bit more.
I honestly would recommend going with the Parker Mountain Machine one to make life easier on yourself.
It is very comfortable and has a slightly rubberized texture to it and it does a great job keeping your hand where it belongs on the firearm. The grip on it is a perfect balance.
There is a small storage compartment in the grip that can be used to store any small items you wish. Perfect for having some extra batteries for your optic or weapon light.
Magpul offers a few different color options too which is cool. They are not that expensive and definitely worth adding to your Scar 17.

BEST SCAR 17 VERTICAL FOREGRIP
I use a vertical foregrip on all my rifles but mainly just as an indexing point for my off-hand. I do not hold the vertical grip like it is intended to be used. Instead, I actually use it more like an angled foregrip.
The Magpul MVG that is M-LOK compatible is perfect for this. It is lightweight and not too large.

BEST SCAR 17 WEAPON LIGHT
Target identification is crucial and if it is dark you will need a good white light.
The Surefire M600 is my go-to for this and I tend to attach one of these to all my rifle setups. It is bright, reliable, and has the option to add a tape switch with a pressure pad for momentary on and off.
This light has been a favorite of mine and many others.

They make a Tail Cap Pressure Pad that was a button on it which will let you have a constant on and off button as well.

The best way to mount one of these to your rifle is with the Arisaka Defense Inline Scout Mount. It’s slim and rock solid.

I have the tape switch running to a Cloud Defensive LCS Mount that works absolutely great. I am super happy with this setup and believe it’s the best solution for mounting a weapon light with a pressure pad.
Having a good weapon light on a rifle is one of my favorite Scar 17 upgrades.

Extra Magazines
Unfortunately, you cannot use the Magpul 25rd 308 magazines without buying an aftermarket lower receiver. I just stick to the FN Scar 20rd Mags.
They work good and I have never had an issue with them. The downside is they are kinda expensive.
For every rifle, I like to have at least 9 magazines total.
