13 Best Red Dot Sights (Complete List)
Here is my list of the Top 13 best red dot sights for any budget. There are a lot of options when it comes to optics, but these are the best red dot sights on the market.
Fast target acquisition is the biggest benefit of having the best red dot sight on your AR-15 or any other rifle.
After reading this, you will be able to choose the best one for you and something that is within your budget.
What is the best red dot sight?
I believe we live in the golden era of rifle optics and many great choices and options are available. This is my list of the top 13 from beginner entry-level to high-end premium red dot sights.
Pairing these up with a magnifier will drive the price up and allow you to benefit the most from these red dot sights.
Battery life, reliability, and clarity are just some criteria for choosing my list of the best red dot sights.
Also, I wanted to pick normally available optics that can easily be purchased. I would be more than comfortable with any of these on my primary battle rifle.
Reflex sights and micro red dot sight are also mentioned in this post. Most people consider a reflex sight and holographic sights to be the same.
I will be making another post in the future on reflex sights and micro red dot sights in greater detail. Reflex sights are becoming more popular on pistols.
Like most things in life, a lot of it is a personal preference and deciding which features are most important to you and your setup.
This list is organized from starting with beginner entry-level budget red dot sight going all the way into high-end professional red dot sights. I include great options for every budget.
Sig Sauer Romeo MSR
The first red dot sight on my list is an affordable red dot sight. The Sig Sauer Romeo MSR is a good option for anyone looking to add a sight but doesn’t want to spend a fortune.
This is a great option for the price!
It is a small and lightweight red dot sight with good battery life and comes with a mount.
The Romeo MSR is a reflex sight with a special lens coating that gives greater light transmission and red dot contrast depending on the situation.
The red dot reflex sight is a 2 MOA size dot which is a good size and very versatile.
I recommend this for a dedicated target shooting rifle and would not put this on a self-defense weapon.
This red dot reflex sight is better suited for recreational shooting, and the reliability and durability are not as good as other options I will mention below.
But if you are looking for something quick and cheap to slap on a rifle, then the Romeo MSR is perfect.
Again this is one of the best cheap red dot reflex sights.

Holosun Paralow
Another good entry-level red dot sight is the Holosun Paralow. This is a lightweight parallax-free optic.
This red dot reflex sight has motion activation illumination that will activate the reticle when movement is detected.
The hours of battery life are also excellent. It will last for 50,000 hrs on a single 2032-style battery. That’s about 5 years.
The objective lens is small, and the dot size is 2 MOA. This is the standard size on most red dots on the market.
It’s a perfect medium for speed and accuracy.
There are also 2 different mounting options available for this red dot reflex sight. An absolute co-witness and a lower 1/3rd.
This is a solid choice for anyone looking for an entry-level red dot reflex sight. It is simple and works well.

Vortex SPARC AR II
The Vortex Sparc II AR Red Dot Sight is next on the list. It is another great optic and is reasonably priced.
It features unlimited eye relief, is parallax-free, and utilizes a single AAA battery which is very common and inexpensive.
Vortex did a great job with this red dot sight.
It is shock-resistant and can be mounted on firearms that are chambered in larger calibers.
The 2 MOA dot size is perfect for most people and you will still be able to make accurate and precise shots at a distance.
There are 12 different brightness settings on the Vortex Sparc II AR.
Two mount options are offered, absolute co-witness and lower 1/3rd.
It also comes with rubber caps to protect the glass.

Holosun HS512C
One of the most innovative mini red dot sights is the Holosun HS512C. It is like having 3 different optics in one with its multi-reticle system.
It features a multiple reticle system with a 65 MOA circle dot reticle, a 2 MOA dot, or a 65 MOA circle only.
This customization is great for every style of shooting and preference.
Aimpoint Pro
A great red dot sight that has been around for a while now is the Aimpoint Pro.
The Aimpoint Pro has long been known as the best red dot sight on the market. It has insane battery life and is extremely reliable and rugged.
Pro stands for patrol rifle optic.
This optic has been tried and tested in combat and is preferred by many military units. It uses 3 DL1/3N batteries, which are relatively common and easy to find.
It has a good size field of view and comes with a mount that is used to attach this optic to your rifle.
The size is also perfect for running a night vision optic behind it in conjunction with the red dot. The PVS-14 is a perfect example and what I would suggest for anyone looking to get into night vision.
The actual dot size is 2 MOA. That means that at 100 yards, the red dot will cover 2 inches of the target.
This is good for making very accurate shots, even with just a red dot optic with no magnification.
You can always add a magnifier behind the optic if you choose to do so. The magnifier that I recommend is the Aimpoint 3X-C red dot magnifier with the twist flip mount. This setup works great.
It comes with the QRP2 mount that is solid, and the Aimpoint Pro has a 30mm tube, so you can use different mounts if you choose to do so.
Battery life on this optic is 3 to 5 years (30,000 hours) which is pretty incredible, I might add.
The Aimpoint Pro is slightly on the heavy side. However, at 11.6 ounces and is slightly bulky.
The windage and elevation dials have good position clicks and are easy to zero. Each click or adjustment is roughly 1/3rd or 0.6 of an MOA.
This optic does come standard with the flip-up scope caps.
If you are looking for a weapon sight that is simple and reliable, the Aimpoint Pro is truly one of the best red dot sights there is, and you cannot go wrong with it.

Sig Romeo 8T
This is one of the best red dots that is packed with a lot of features. The Sig Romeo 8T is an excellent optic and worth considering.
Click here to check out my full review of the Sig Romeo8T
The Romeo 8T is one of the newest red dots on my list, so it hasn’t had much time to be proven to the other optics on this list. However, it is quite impressive.
It has a changeable reticle that you can customize to your preference and has a very clean and crisp red dot—lots of customizability with this one.
There are 13 brightness settings, 10 daylight, and 3-night vision.
This red dot runs on one single CR123 battery and will work 40,000 hours before needing a fresh battery. An aluminum housing surrounds the optic, which helps protect it during extreme use.
The Romeo 8T has four different reticle options with a 65 MOA ring and BDC marks. This red dot is parallax-free and can be used even when shooting in awkward positions.
This red dot is unique because it is motion-activated to save on battery life. If it is inactive for 2 minutes the optic will shut down, and as soon as it detects motion it will turn on again.
Windage and evaluation adjustments are in 1/2 MOA increments and are easy to adjust when zeroing this optic with your rifle.
The mount is integrated into the red dot itself, so you do not need to purchase a mount separately, which is nice.
It locks on your rifle with its 2 lock bars that will slide into any 1913-style Picatinny rail.
There are also two built-in lens covers. The front one flips down, and the rear one flips up. This is to prevent as much of your view from being covered as possible.
The Romeo 8T has a very large window with a good field of view and a large sight picture. This optic can be used with the Juliet4 4x magnifier and this will let you get the most out of this red dot.
This optic is also assembled in America, which is good when spending your hard-earned money. Overall this is a very impressive and great red dot.

Trijicon SRO
The Trijicon SRO is another one of the best red dots. This is primarily a pistol sight but it can also be used on a rifle, carbine, or PDW (pistol defense weapon).
It is very small and lightweight. The smallest sight on this list.
I often see this sight used in conjunction with an LPVO (low powered variable optic). Which is great for transitioning to nearby targets.
There are 3 different reticle size options for the Trijicon SRO:
I recommend the 2.5 MOA size dot because it is the most versatile and easy to use for most people. It is the perfect balance between making accurate shots and quickly being able to aim at targets.
Unlike most of the other optics on this list that take traditional-style batteries, this uses a 2032-style battery.
Trijicon made an improvement on the SRO with a “top-loading battery”. This way you do not have to completely remove it to replace batteries.
Also, the field of view is greater compared to the Trijicon RMR.
There are 8 different brightness settings with a bonus “super-bright mode” and also 2 night vision compatible settings.
Another downside to this is that the light emitter is not protected and if any dirt, moisture, or debris gets in there, it may distort the red dot.
Besides that, it is an excellent red dot sight. This would work best for a minimalist setup or have paired with an LPVO.

Trijicon MRO HD
The Trijicon MRO HD is the improved and updated version of the standard Trijicon MRO and is worth upgrading. The red dot is a lot crisper and easier for your eye to pick up.
The HD version of this optic has been slightly updated and refined over the original model.
The original version of this optic came out in 2016 and there were some complaints and minor issues.
The slight blue tint to the lens was reported to be distracting, and there was a slight fish blow effect when looking through the red dot with magnification.
The newer HD version has corrected both problems and vastly improved over the original.
There are also 2 different reticle options. The standard 2 MOA single red dot has a segmented 68 MOA circle with the red dot in the center. This is similar to an EOTech reticle.
The segmented circle does allow for faster target acquisition but comes with a trade-off. The battery life is greatly lessened when leaving the Trijicon MRO HD on this setting.
When zeroing this optic, the dials are in 1/2 MOA increments, and the adjustment dials are not as audible and have noticeable clicks as some other optics.
There are multiple brightness settings for daytime and also for night vision.
Trijicon offers a 3X Magnifier that pairs up nicely with the MRO HD and lets you get the most out of this optic. The magnifier is very clear as well.
The Trijicon MRO HD is also sold as a combo with the 3X magnifier. Click Here to check the current prices of the combo.
If you decide you want to use an aftermarket mount of the one you have that didn’t come with a mount, I would recommend the Geissele Super Precision Mount for it.
I prefer the lower 1/3rd height co-witness when mounting it on a rifle.
Overall this is an excellent red dot sight for your rifle.

EOTech EXPS 3
This is one of the most battle-hardened and a very durable sight on our list. The EOTech EXPS 3 has been used by many different law enforcement agencies and military units for quite some time now and has been proven in the field.
Technically it is a holographic sight and not a red dot, and this is a good option for anyone with astigmatism and whose eyes aren’t what they used to be.
The EXPS3 comes with the mount integrated into it, so you will not have to purchase a separate mount which is nice.
This mount has a quick throw lever, is easy to take off, and holds zero very well. Also, it rides at a lower 1/3rd co-witness which is what I prefer.
When zeroing these holographic sights, the turrets are in 1/2 MOA adjustments and are very easy to use.
The turrets themselves are on the right side of the optic and are recessed slightly into the housing. This adds some extra protection.
The reticle is great for fast target acquisition because the center dot is surrounded by the ring.
The center red dot is a 1 MOA dot surrounded by the 68 MOA ring. This makes shooting very fast and accurate at the same time. The picture is a very crisp dot and ring.
The EOTech EXPS3 takes a single CR123 battery and has a battery life of 1000 hrs. This isn’t as long as some other optics on this list, but if battery life isn’t a concern for you, the EXPS3 is the way to go.
The battery cap is also tethered to help from losing it.
There are 20 different settings for daylight brightness and 10 night vision settings. Lots of options for all different environments. It is easy to adjust with 2 up and down buttons on the side and a 1-night vision button.
Also, this weapon sight is one of the quickest to use with night vision optics if you are not using any IR laser.
If you like shooting with a magnifier, EOTech makes the G33 Magnifier that works great with this optic and many others.
EOTech also sells this as a combo if you are considering purchasing both, you can save a little bit by picking up the combo package. Click Here to check the current prices of the combo package.
Again this is a true holographic sight that is recommended for anyone with astigmatism.
If you are looking for a reliable and extremely fast red dot sight, this is one of the best ones you can get.

Aimpoint T2
The most versatile red dot on this list is the Aimpoint T2. That is why it is close to the top of my list.
This is one of the clearest and most quality red dot optics on the market. There aren’t any fancy options or settings, it’s just a red dot. But the best red dot sight there is.
Aimpoint has long been known in the firearms industry for making some of the best and high-quality optics, and the T2 is exactly that.
This is one of their micro-optics and is very low profile and lightweight while remaining durable.
It weighs only 3 ounces and has an insane battery life of 50,000 hrs. It has a 2 MOA red dot size which provides the shooter the ability to make very precise shots.
One great thing about this optic is the lens clarity, and I must really emphasize this. The glass has no noticeable tint, and that dot is absolutely clear. This is truly a top-of-the-line red dot.
The adjustment turrets are protected by a raised portion of the housing, and the MOA adjustments are in 0.4 MOA.
There are 12 different brightness settings that are very easy to adjust.
This optic is night vision compatible.
A downside to the AimpointT2 is the small sight picture.
It is parallax free and comes with 2 transparent flip-up lens caps. The field of view is limited with this red dot which is the only reason some people dislike it.
That all comes down to personal preference.
The biggest and only downside to this optic is the price. It is expensive. Also, it doesn’t come with a mount that needs to be purchased separately.
The Aimpoint 3X-C magnifier works great with the T2 as well.
If you want the ultimate red dots available, the Aimpoint T2 is what I recommend.

Leupold LCO
One of the newest red dot sights on this list is the Leupold LCO Carbine Optic red dot sight. This is a micro red dot that is great for having a low-profile setup.
This red dot is a closed system and will protect it from the elements. It is rugged and lightweight and has a scratch-resistant lens.
With 16 different brightness settings, you can adjust it for your environment depending on the ambient light.
The 1 MOA dot is very small and precise. However, some people may not like how small the dot is or people with poor vision. This does allow for accurate shots.
This red dot sight is great for someone who likes a minimalist setup. It is light and allows you to transition from multiple targets quickly.
Good battery life and great quality glass. Again, the only downside to the Leupold LCO red dot sight is the small 1 MOA dot and a small sight picture.
Not for everyone but the people that like this love this red dot sight.

Aimpoint Comp M4
Aimpoint is king when it comes to red dots. The Aimpoint Comp M4 is at the top of my list as the best red dot sight.
Extremely durable and battle-hardened. Simple and effective. Long track record of combat use.
This optic is perfect for everyone. I love this red dot sight for self-defense because of the insane reliability and battery life.
The mount is rock solid and integral to the optic, so you do not have to purchase a mount separately.
Nine different brightness settings allow users to adjust to their unique environment.
There are 7 night vision settings that work with night vision goggles or a mountable night vision unit. The modes adjust the brightness of the red dot and can not be seen by the naked eye.
Battery life is remarkable—80,000 hrs which is legendary in terms of hours of battery life. A key feature of any good self-defense weapon is being able to grab it and use it at a moment’s notice.
Leaving the optic constantly is recommended for a staged rifle dedicated to self-defense.
The red dot size is 2 MOA which is perfect for precise and accurate shots, but not too small, so it is difficult to see and has a large sight picture.
The Aimpoint Comp M4 is also waterproof and submersible up to 150 ft.
Crystal clear glass provides a sharp and crisp image with no fishbowl effect or dark spots near the edges.
If you are looking for the absolute best red dot that money can buy, the Aimpoint Comp M4 is what I strongly recommend for anyone serious about self-defense. No gimmicky features, just simple and reliable.
It is also a very bright red dot compared to other red dot sights.

Final Considerations
When choosing a red dot, get one that you like. People in the gun community will often try and push their favorite accessories on you and say that is what you need to get.
As long as you get quality stuff that fits your needs, then you are good to go.
Now with saying that, you get what you pay for. That is true in the gun world, and keep that in mind. I would rather spend money and get quality gear once than constantly keep upgrading.
Some people will stand by their iron sights, and that’s okay. Iron sights don’t need batteries and are almost impossible to break.
A good red dot optic is superior to a set of iron sights.
A red dot sight will give you an advantage over basic iron sights. Most modern red dots have good battery life, and even budget red dots have good battery life.
I hope you enjoyed the article, and hopefully, this helps you choose what the best red dot for you is. Let me know in the comments down below which one you prefer.
